In 2019 Rosemount Development Trust’s local heritage project saw people from all ages and backgrounds getting together to look at the history (and pre-history) of the area.
A series of ten workshops took place with local schools, a youth group, the 50+ Young at heart Club and at Rosemount Lifelong Learning. Three of Rosemount Development Trust’s directors took part in the project as well.
Activities involved identifying the locations of old photographs using maps, finding which historic buildings still remain, investigating the trades and industries that used to employ local people, viewing archives in the local library and handling artefacts.
The historical investigations by our participants covered a variety of time periods from the Roman era to the more recent past. The 50+ Young at Heart club looked at flint tools and the Roman era with Archaeology Scotland while our youth group did artefact handling, how to decipher old maps and record buildings. Our primary school groups also performed activities such as making Roman lamps, and received ‘Heritage Hero’ awards.

Your discoveries about local history and heritage helped inspire the designs of the 12 mosaic panels which will be sited permanently in Roystonhill Spire Park.
